WHAT WE DO

Since 1964, UWAB has focused on the welfare and education of women and girls, across all barriers of class, creed and physical ability. The goal of UWAB is to provide women and girls with a better future by giving them access to better options.  We have aimed at improving the status of women and ensuring personal empowerment through our activities.

Over the past four decades our key focus areas have been:
 Empowering Working Women
    Ensuring safe & affordable housing
Providing forums for self-development and professional advancement

 Training and advancement
    Providing Computer Education
    Promoting Financial Literacy

 Community Development
    Rural Development project
Tuitions for the local community students
    Scholarships and fee subsidies

To achieve our goals, UWAB has focused on providing the following services to women in Bangalore:

* Safe and affordable accommodation for women through the UWAB Working Women’s Hostel, built in 1978.

* Plans to build a second hostel in Indiranagar have been initiated and fundraising efforts are currently underway to meet the construction costs.

* A Computer Training Centre for women and youth from low income groups.

* Spoken English classes for women and youth from low income groups.

* Community development at Lakshmipura, a rural area close to Bangalore.

* Additional teaching assistance to needy students.

* Opportunities to apply for scholarships for higher education in countries such as Australia, UK, United States and Japan are available through the Indian and Bangalore Chapter of UWA.

* We have recently opened a "thrift and gift shop - Aspirations"; which allows individuals to reuse and recyle while still others are able to purchase things that they may have otherwise only aspired for.

* In the pipe-line are more empowerment schemes and projects - such as a business start up support center, a financial empowerment template

We conduct events typically thought and action provoking talks for our members on the last Saturday of every month. This is usually an opportunity for members to meet, mingle and discuss projects, new ideas and actions. These meetings are for empowering our members as well as having a little fun!
